October 8, 2012

Dear Family and Friends,

This week was an amazing week filled with the spirit, personal revelation and miracles that helped me a lot and blessed the lives of others. It has been hot, humid, and raining this week, there was a night I don"t even think that I slept because I was sweating so bad and there were ninja mosquitoes landing on my face feet arms and flying into my ears. But nevertheless, this week was amazing.

My companion and I had a hard time knowing what to do this week, we have cut a lot of investigators, and a lot have dropped us, so we´re almost back to where we started. We are trying to work with the members with references, but with how small our Branch is, it has been pretty hard. So we were walking and we didnt know where to go, my companion felt like there was a house we should visit. I thought, yeah... he just wants to go there because they always give us food, but he said the spirit was telling him, so we went. We got there, and it became apparent as to what we needed to do, their family needed so help. They are one of the strongest families in Jacareí, but they have been going through some hard times. We planned to come back the next day and see what else they needed.
We came back, and the mom of the family told us that she wants us to dedicate the house. This is in response to some of her children seeing things, and having very horrible dreams. We planned to come back on Friday, it was Wednesday.
We felt like we should stop by and do it on Thursday, so we stopped by, it was about 8:30 we started by singing hymns. We sang all 5 verses of Mais Perto Quero Estar (Nearer my God to Thee) and i honestly had never heard such harmony for that song in my entire life. And Brazil usually isn't the best with harmony, haha, but this song was amazing. Then we had a opening prayer, I opened my scriptures to a random scripture mastery, D&C 64:9-11 (http://www.lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/64?lang=eng) and had someone read. I bore my testimony about forgiveness and how we need to forgive ourselves. I then felt prompted to open a testimony meeting with the 4 family members that were there. They shared some powerful testimonies, and words cannot describe the emotions that were felt. It was a very sacred meeting. One of the sons who has been inactive, but who has been so strong in the church in the past, with tears in his eyes said that he "[doesn´t] want it to happen again!" Talking about the things he has seen every time he tried to pray or read the scriptures. There was a tense silence for a few seconds, then I asked him if he would like a blessing as well, and he said yes.
We sang As Famílias Poderão Ser Eternas (Families can be together forever) and then kneeled in prayer for the dedication. Elder Lutz dedicated the home, and the spirit was very strong. After the dedication I gave the oldest son a blessing, and I the spirit was really strong. I could feel the words just flowing out of my mouth. We left the home knowing that we had felt the spirit really strong, and we know that everyone´s testimonies were strengthened.
Saturday night, after conference, we went to go do a baptismal interview with a girl named Chiara (Pronounced: Kiara). She has been ready to be baptized for about 2 months now, but her dad wouldn't let it happen. She goes to church everyday, reads the scriptures and you can see the virtue in her eyes. Her mom, Sílvia is a member of the church, but she lives in New York (She lived in Arizona haha, she actually lived in Harris ward by Mesa High). Her mom was born and raised, and baptized here in Jacareí. Sílvia told her that she will give her permission to be baptized, and she will come down to see it.
She planned for Conference weekend, her mom came down Saturday morning, and we went to do the interview after conference. She was very excited, and she had picked me to baptize her, I think because she knew me the longest out of all the missionaries that were here. She passed the interview, and during the interview I talked to her mom, Sílvia who lived in Arizona. Haha, we talked about arizona for a while, she says its the best place to live. She lived in Harris Ward by Mesa High. She loves Tia Rosa"s restaraunt, Mesa Temple Easter Pageant, and she actually has hiked Havasupai, but the craziest thing of all was that she was at the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Gilbert Arizona Temple. That means, while I was there, as a random boy who just turned 18, was in the same place as her, and in a about 2 years I would baptize her daughter in Brazil! haha, it is such a small world.
Anyway, us 4 missionaries got in the car to go home, and she dropped off her daughter at her dads house, then as we were pulling away, Chiara came back to talk to her mom. Her mom got back in the car, started to drive us home and said, She said she wont get baptized. We were all so shocked. After talking about it, we said a prayer asking that Heavenly Father would give her a feeling that it was the right thing to do, and she would feel peace during conference, and receive an assurance that it was the right thing. When us four missionaries got home, we started to pray individually. While I was praying I had a feeling that said, Jejue in English, Fast.
So us four missionaries began to fast for her, we also decided to cancel or at least post-pone our lunch that we had specially scheduled in another city where we would watch conference. We prayed, pondered, and everyone knew that it was very important, because if she didn't baptize that day, she might never get baptized, because her mom lives in New York, and her Dad and Grandparents with whom she lives are very against the church.
We arrived at conference, and saved spots for her, and she showed up smiling with her mom and another family. She was feeling very good about being baptized, and then she walked out during conference! I though she was having second thoughts, but her mom found her kneeling and praying on the side of the chapel alone. When she came back in, I felt like all of the prayers and fasting that we have done was being answered. The speakers in conference spoke amazing things that seem like they were directed to her. We had the most beautiful baptismal meeting I have ever seen in Brazil, with strong testimonies and beautiful musical numbers. One hymn that was sung was If you could hie to Kolob which was in English, because we don't have that one in Portuguese.
It was a good conference. And the weekend was amazing. I loved what was said, I didn't get the opportunity to go to priesthood session, so Ill have to read those talks. I am so so so excited for all of the opportunities that the Younger members of the church will have with the ability to serve a mission with 18 years for boys and 19 for girls. I encourage everyone to go on a mission. I sure hope that this decision of the Lord is backed up by the faith and action of the members of the church, and we receive a larger amount of missionaries. I know that our mission could be split soon if we have more missionaries, and I think that this is the case for a lot of missions.
Emily, you should serve a mission. I wont tell you that you have to, but it should be a priority to know the will of the Lord concerning this. I"m pretty sure that He wont tell you no. I was thinking that maybe it will be a trend for boys to say that they want to marry a returned missionary, what the girls of the church already say. I know that I would love marrying someone who has served a faithful full time mission, and I would be a huge blessing in my life. Just know that the blessings of serving a mission far outweigh the fears. It"s not a commandment for the young women of the church, but it is an amazing opportunity.
I want to testify that we have a great work to do, missionary work is a priority. We can be a part of it, or not, but the Work of God with go forth boldly nobly and independent, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished and the Great Jehovah shall say, "The work is done."
This is work is true. We need to repent now and become worthy to help with this work and receive the blessings in our lives. Whether a missionary, a bishop, a scoutmaster, a primary teacher, a program organizer or a home teacher. You have a great work to do, we have responsibilities to fulfill. Lets do it!!!

Love,
Elder Halls

PS- Hey i know you just sent a package, but i want an American football.... like really bad.. haha, and lemon drop candies(request from a member).

Semana antes Conferência Geral!!! October 1, 2012

Família,

This week was another good week, we had quite a few dissapointers, but we were about to finish the week out very well.
We started out this week, with about 25 people we were teaching, we have cut almost everyone of those 25. haha, we had one person tell us that they didn't want us to come by anymore, and we had other families who just aren't progressing. We are putting our faith in the promise that "the field is white, all ready to harvest" and we are going to start looking for the people. So far we have about 2 people who I believe are truly looking for what we have to offer.
Elder Squires and I were on a bus going to a meeting in another city, São José dos Campos, when a man started to speak to us in English, he was actually sitting right next to me. I explained to him about the Book of Mormon, and he was instantly receptive. He told me that he wanted to read it, and I explained about priesthood authority, and the vision that Joseph Smith had. I have taught him 2 times, and he is so receptive. He is going through some personal problems, so it is hard for him to make it to church. But he told me that everything he has read he has felt to be true. He also said that one day he believes that he will be baptized. He said he has searched every church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only one he hasn't searched. So now he is reading, he can tell you everything in the Book of Mormon up to 1 Nephi 12 (http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm?lang=eng) Including the introductions in the beginning.
The other is named C., actually the fist time I taught her was last night. Elder Denis (who is serving in the other area of Jacareí with Elder Wilker) baptized a girl in the first area of his mission who is preparing to serve a full time mission. She brought a friend to church named C. who is a girl who has almost no time to meet with us, but she is really reading to Book of Mormon and trying to understand. Last night we taught her, and explained about 3 of the 4 lessons that we teach before baptism. haha, i am excited to work with her, because she is really searching for the truth.
This week as I have really tried to study more effectively and truly feast upon the words of Christ, i have been given inspiration and guidance. I have been thinking about study a lot this week, and I really that I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the study of the scriptures that happened in 1820 when Joseph Smith was studying the Bible and really putting forth effort to know. When Elder Jeffery R Holland came to our mission he said that "you can´t have a million dollar experience with twenty five cents of effort" So i have really been trying to do my part and really put in all I can to have experiences like that. I have felt the spirit more strongly and I have felt more of an intense desire to talk to people. To help everyone have what i have, studying the scriptures daily is an act of faith, and we will lose fear as we continually demonstrate our faith and study.
I challenge everyone to have a simple yet meaningful missionary experience this week. Read the Liahona, or Ensign, and study the first presidency message this month (September). We should be prepared on our side of the field, because there are really people who are prepared to receive the gospel. This is the promise. We are not seed planters, we are harvesters. We should study and pray everyday for a chance to share the gospel with someone who is prepared to receive it. Elder Lutz and I taught Relief Society and Priesthood about this concept yesterday in our Branch. The Lord has people who are ready and looking. Are we, as members of the church, prepared to answer their questions, bear our testimony, and follow the promptings of the Spirit tell us what to do and what to say? This is a question I have been asking myself almost everyday for the last week, and it is bringing blessings into my life as I walk forward with faith and help others know of the blessings that we have in our lives.

Love you guys, the scriptures are sooo awesome!!!

PS Watch conference!!! Its awesome too!

Dear Family,
How is everyone doing back home! This week went very well, we had interviews and we worked very hard as missionaries. Our mission president gave us alot of advice and told me some things that helped me alot. We were able to work very hard this week and feel the spirit and power of the priesthood as we diligently labored to find people to bring to church and invite to baptism.
Yesterday was our branch´s first day in a new location that they found which is the second floor of a mechanic´s garage in a blue building. The neighborhood surrounding has almost no members. Except for the family that we will baptize in two weeks, (It is really a tender mercy to this family, they sacrificed so much to go to the other building, and now it is in their front door), but first we need to marry them, which the marriage will also be held there.
We worked really really really hard on saturday. We walked up and down every road in about 3 neighborhoods, clapping on doors, talking to people, teaching lessons trying to invite them to come to church, read the book of mormon, change things in their lives, and ultimately repent and be baptized. We worked soooo hard. Haha, we started at 10:30, and worked until 9:00. We found quite a few people that said they would come to church, and we had 17 people lined up to go to church, all of which we were going to walk with or call the day before. So we were really excited! We went to bed that night, dead tired only knowing that we would have to wake up at 615 to get to start working at 8:30 to help the Ward with everything at 9 then get everything ready for our Branch at 3:00 until 6. I fasted and prayed that day that everyone would wake up and go to church, and that we would have everyone here so that we could teach alot of people and prepare someone for baptism.
So what happens? Haha, we show up at the old church building to tell people that the building changed and to help people get to the Ward at 9:00  (the branch and the ward use to both be at 9am everyday) A bunch of people who we have never met before, and some who we have taught months ago show up to church. We were very happy to see so many people! The Ward finished, we walked and ate lunch with a member, then we walked to start getting people. The first 7 people couldnt go, and the man who was supposed to get confirmed didnt want to go. We actually found out that he has been drinking, so we have to talk to the president about him. But pretty much our hearts were broken, we even got an email from the most promising lady who said she couldnt go, and the elect family we found couldnt go either so anyway to make a long story short, we went to the ladies house who said she couldnt go, and she came with us. We showed up at church, and the members were so kind and loving, and we still we very happy and we had a lot of hope and knew that we tried our best.
Then a man that we had passed earlier on the street came by and the 1st counsiler asked for me and my companion. We went over to him, and he was a very humble man, he said he didnt know why he turned around, but he was hungry and he was looking for work, and also he said he felt a spirit about this place when he saw us. After a few minutes, the leaders were able to give him R$4 which is about 2 dollars, when I gave him R$10 to go and eat. He asked quite a few questions and we left him with  a few pamphlets and o livro de mormon, and I gave him a blessing. We will go visit him this week, but I dont know if we will be able to find him. All I know is that an answer to my prayers and fasting was given, I was edified as I was able to teach him about Priesthood Authority, The spirit, and Charity, the Love of Christ. I bore my testimony after in the Branch and I felt the spirit so strong. It was about 7 when everyone left the church meeting, and all I wanted to do was teach more people, and go and find families to bring to church. I was so blessed that day, and after 2 of the most tiring days of my mission, I still have so much energy. haha,
Anyway. Im really sorry for babbling on, I just really love the mission. Sometimes it is really hard, and other times it is really fun, but it is always worth it. The time I have to share the gospel and to wear the Saviors name is a time that I dont want to pass by fast. Remember the importance of Sharing the Gospel. Remember the words of the prophets in the book of Moroni about faith hope and charity. If we have 1 Faith in Jesus Chirst, 2 Hope in His Atonement, and Charity for all mankind, we will become the men and women we need to be to live with God, and be like him. I love the gosepl, never forget the infinate power of the Savior´s atonement. Just move forward, trusting in him, sometimes it will be as the story when you think that this Journey is so hard, you will find that you have been walking next to the Savior, but when you look back, you will only see one set of footprints, showing you that He carried you the whole way. There is a verse in Isaiah That talks about how He carries us from birth, and we dont know it. His way is easy, His burden is light. I know that these things are true. And if you have trust in the savior, you will find strenght, and relief from the pains of the world. I testify in the name of Jesus Christ that if you trust in him, you shall not fall.
Love you guys!!!

August 27, 2012

Well this week went pretty well, we had an amazing conference with an area
president of the 70 named Elder Godoy. We met with him on Thursday morning
with the other zones that are farther from the capital. He spoke to us
about many things, but the thing that I liked the best was he talking about
why we´re here on the mission. He gave us three reasons:

To save others
To build the Church
To save ourselves

Every reason is important, and any one of those, if forgotten, could result
in not doing what we came here to accomplish. If we baptize baptize
baptize, but the numbers of people in sacrament, priesthood holders and
recommend holders don't grow, we´re not doing our job right. And if those
two aspects grow, but we still have our own personal problems and habits
that we cant overcome, then we are not growing into the people that we need
to become.
A lot of analyzing was done during the conference, which leaves room for a
lot of repentance. I know that this time is truly sacred, and it is a time
given to me to help me grow closer to God, Jesus Christ, The Holy Ghost,
and God´s children in Brazil. Also I have found myself grow much closer to
my family back home and my friends who I love, even though I don't have
anywhere near the same frequency of communication with them, at times I
feel like my communication with them is much more powerful now, and much
more fulfilling. Even if it is just a short letter from a missionary in
Bolivia, Spain, Brazil, the States or from a friend back home, I feel so
much peace in knowing that I made the right decision to come out here, and
often times i feel impressed to pray for people back home and to write to
them.

July 16th - "As we learn and humble ourselves before God, we will be changed..."

haha wow, it seems like so much has gone on this summer with everyone! There are so many things i wish i could reply about! I love everyone back home, and i hope everyone is doing great!
So, we went to the doctor, and they gave me some anti-biotics, but in the mean while, some members have been trying to help me out. Did you know that if you put a bees wax cotton straw in your ear and light it on fire, it creates suction? Haha, you learn things like that when you have an ear infection and you tell the members.
This week was kinda a downer, we met some awesome, big families, but none of them went to church. It is also getting really cold and rainy! We are starting to work better with the members, we are awaiting some referrals and family nights that sound like they will be really awesome!
The Ward had a baptism this week which i feel a little a part of! There was a boy who went to the Festa Junina, and really enjoyed it. then Elder Merril and Steele went to his house to show him the restoration video, which he really liked. The next day, Elder Merril and I were doing a division, and he told us he wanted to be baptized, and then bore his testimony to the investigator that i brought. It was a very amazing experiance. He told about how he prayed and how it changed his life in 4 days, and he didnt want to do anything wrong, and wanted to be a new person. The gospel is like that, as we learn and humble oursleves before God, we will be changed and we will not have the same desires that we used to.
I love you all!

Monday, July 9th - "We are really excited!"

Oi Família!!!! Tudo Bem?

How is everyone doing? I just want everyone to know that I recieved some amazing letters this week, a lot of faith building testimonies from everyone and some wonderful, inspired experiences. I dont have much time today, because we are going to eat lunch, and then go a park with some members today. This week was pretty tough here. Elder Squires and i were doing really well on monday, tuesady but wednesday came, I got really sick with I think strep throat. We still worked a lot, but it was definately pretty hard. I am pretty much better right now, and I am hoping this week will be great.
We had 2 or 3 meetings with our ward leaders trying to get them excited about missionary work, and I think they´re getting excited! We are going to start doing a family night with a family almost every night if we can! We are hoping that everyone will come on board especially because we only have like 6 or 7 families in the ward. haha, every family night will be an opportunity for us to bring a non member or for them to bring a non member. Also, we want to involve some of the many less active members in the area. We are really excited for this and i think that it will help us alot!
One amazing experiance this week was on friday. Elder Squires and I were walking and making visits to a ward party, Festa Junina (Or Festa Julila haha because it is no longer june). And we decided that we would stop in and see if we could use somebody´s truck to help us move some things for a family that we are teaching that is moving. We had some difficulty getting over there, but felt it was really important, and when we got there, The man we wanted to talk to was asleep, and his wiife told us to just call that night. So we were about to leave, when we popped our head in the house of another family in our ward inside of the same gate and we saw our secratery sitting there. He was lying on a bed with bandage all over his knee! We had given him a blessing a couple weeks back, and he asked for a blessing saying that he just had surgury on his knee from an accident. We annointed him with oil consecrated for the healing of the sick, and then I gave him a blessing. It was a very neat experiance. I remember blessing him that his family would be provided for financially while he is resting. After the prayer, he said that he will be out for 2 months, and then after that he will have physical therapy for a year.
We also had a Festa on satuday night!!!!! It was awesome! Alot of people came, and we we able to get some new people to teach. We ate Bolinhas Caipiras (which makes me so hungry just thinking about. haha) and had a lot of people there! I would send pictures, but I forgot my chord today to send pictures. Anyway, they had square dancing, and food! And a big room dedicated for missionary work! It was a great oppotunity! I wish i knew how to send you videos!
Anyway! I will respond to your letters next week, I love you all!  I am so grateful for a mom so close to the spirit. I love you and dad so much!
  I love you!
Elder Halls
PS- Do you think that I could get a calander or something with all the cousins birthdays? I would love to write some of them, maybe all. haha I love you! Enjoy the heat! We are in winter here!

"One way I have found to repent is to seek the word of God, bear testimony and live it" ~Elder Halls

I love you mom! Haha, you sent me the message amost exactly 30 seconds after I got on. I dont have to much to write this week, not much happened!!! Haha, I cant remember very much other than the feelings. I am so jealous that you guys went to Lake Powell!!!!!! haha, to the people here, if you were to bring them to Lake Powell, i think they would think the´re in paradise. Or maybe that is just what I would think being there, having been on my mission for 4 months already. Man, I wish you guys spoke portugues. haha, its way fun to speak, and I made an oath to myself that I will only speak portugues when possible for now on. haha it has been going really well, and i am amazed at the things i have learned in just 3 days of not speaking english. Haha, in other situations it probably wouldnt be so hard, but living in a house with 4 americans and one of them being newer than me, its a little hard, but the more i speak the language regulary instead of english, the more i feel the spirit testify to me that this is where i need to be, that I am called to be here, and that either I am supposed to teach these people, or that they are supposed to teach me, which i am just about sure that it is the latter.
That is just what I said in my testimony yesterday in front of Ramo Jardim Liberdade (Jardim Liberdade Branch) haha, i have been really loving my studies and waking up early lately, and when it came time to bear our testimonies yesterday, i was the first person up. haha, its really funny how when you have the spirit with you and are seeking through faith to follow the scriptures how you literally have no fear.
Let me back track a little. This week, was a little tough, we had a rough start, and we were in a slump. We realized that pretty much everyone we had been teaching, we arent going anywhere with. We were having little success, and it was making us discouraged. During a companion study, we talked about it, and we talked about how to get out of the slump, how just 2 weeks ago we were sowing and reaping miricles, but lately it just wasnt happening. So i made a few commitements to myself that I know if i am faithful i will be able to keep. One, I will be exactly obidient to the rules. I will not look to how i can strech the rules, but i will look at how i can more fully accomplish and keep the rules. Two, I will speak portugues at all times even with americans, even if it is hard, i will ask how to say things and learn while i am speaking, even if i am in a house 3 other americans. haha, three, I will make 20 contacts a day. This is something that President Moreira spoke about alot, which is very hard for each companionship to get 40 contacts everyday, but it is very possible.
Anyway, haha, I have been doing some praying, and alot of thinking and pondering at how i can improve. Friday and saturday i was thinking all day. Saturday i woke up early at 6 so I could finish the book of mormon from where i was at and have time to pray about it. I thought all day about what i should do to become the missionary i want to become. Oh, haha also, this week (sorry for jumping around so much) I had a vision. A dream, about me walking into our house on Woodside way after my mission, getting picked up from the airport. The temple was finished, we were going to do a session before i got released. And I walked in the house through the garage, got to the laundry room, and just broke down in tears. I couldnt bear the feeling of longing to continue on my mission, to serve the Lord, to love the people of Brazil, my companions, the Branches of sometimes just 40 people. Wow, i am about crying right now as I write this. But anyway, feelings like this, reading the book of mormon, bring people back to church that havent been in such a long time, (we walked with 2 children in a family who almost begged there parents to let us take them to church), watching the baptism of a family in the Ward of the other elders, it has just brought a lot of things into perspective.
So i want to act. I know that i will cry when i get home, and i will be filled with saudades for the people here and for my call as a missionary. But i want to be able to look into the eyes of everyone i meet and say, i gave everything i could, i worked as hard as i could, i loved them more than i loved my own life. Once i can do this, i will be a successful missionary.
Anyway, so I love the opportunity we have to repent and to come back to the savior. One way i have found to repent is to seek the word of God, bear testimony and live it.
I hope everyone takes every change in there life as an opportunity to repent and become the person you want to become. This life is so short to not become who you want to be, you need to choose now, now is the time. Life is too short to fill it with excuses or i things you wish you would have done. Through the atonement of Jesus Christ, we can change our lives. But we first need to humble ourselves and pettion him to show us how we can change, that through his sacrifice we may be saved. I love the words of Ether, the prophet, at the end of the history of his people `34 Now the last words which are written by aEther are these: Whether the Lord will that I be translated, or that I suffer the will of the Lord in the flesh, it mattereth not, if it so be that I am bsaved in the kingdom of God. Amen.`
I want to have the same surety in the Lord. Read The Book of Mormon, read the Bilble, read the words of the prophets, read Jesus the Christ, treasure up the scriptures.
I love you all, i love the people here in Brazil, I love this church I love our savior Jesus Christ. I remember the words of Jeffery R Holland to us saying, One of the many truths we brought the world is the image of a weeping God. Jesus Christ is calling us back always, his arms are always outstreched seeking to gather us in. All the challenges in our lives can be a way to learn and grow if we but put our trust in Jesus Christ.
Com Amor,
Elder Halls

June 26, 2012 - We are really excited to be here!!

Happy Fathers day!!!!!!

I am so grateful for my dad, and my grandfathers. I was able to spend a lot of time with them before my mission either working, or hunting, or doing yard work ect. It was an awesome time! I have definitely been blessed with an amazing family. Thank you for all being such wonderful examples to me.
I think the Advengers idea is great.
hahaha, we walk by the movie posters for Os Vingadores (the advengers) almost everyday!!! haha, and a missionary who is visiting this area was just telling us that he saw it and loved it. haha, and when I heard Ammon was smiling the entire time, I knew it must be a great movie!

Well this week was pretty tough. Pretty much none of our lessons happened that we had planned because of one thing or another, and out of the 7 people that promised to go to church, nobody went.. But Rosangela did get confirmed and it was an amazing experiance. (ok, i dont know if i am spelling anything right, because this computer says everything is misspelled) We asked Daniel Woss, the missionary who was visiting this area to do the confirmation. It was really special because he baptised her children, but Rosangela was still working through quiting smoking.

Anyway, Elder Squires and I are staying in Jacareì por mais um transferência!!! For one more transfer!!! Same with Elder Merril and Elder Steele. So 3 transfers with only americans. haha, I think it will be good because by the time I have a Brazillian companion i should be able to say pretty much everything i need to. Well we are going to Almoço right now (lunch but bigger. and better. haha) so I have to get off, but we are really excited to be here! We have a few families and people that we really want to baptize, and the members here are awesome.

We just got news on sunday that we need to find a new building for the members to meet, because we are going to demolish the old church building in august and build a bigger one!!!! The members are all really excited, and so are we. And we are probably going to have the temporary building closer to a couple of the more concentrated areas so it will be easier to get members to church.

I love you all! Oh no! I forgot to tell about the conference with the president. It was amazing!!! He knows his stuff. He talked about symoblism and the different meanings of the Hebrew words that the Bible uses. I learned that the Brother of Jared used Stones in his boats and how his boat was similar to the Arc of Noah. The Hebrew word for rock, is Tshomething.. i forget, but it can mean window or rock, and in the bible, it said Noah put a window in his arc. So its pretty cool to draw the similaraties. He said that the reason why the Brother of Jared didnt ask Heavenly father what he should do is because it was written in the records of Noah that they alread had.  It was amazing, He talked about alot about symbolism including jacob 5 talking about the Olive Trees. haha, he asked the question, why would anyone plant an olive tree in the middle of a vineyard?

Alright! Im heading out!!!  It was hard to say goodbye to president moreira! we sang him a song

The chorus was the following

Podemos estar juntos para sempre, eu sei.

I love you and hope everything is going well!!! This mission is passing by so fast already! Im almost at my 6 month mark! I love you!

Elder Halls

PS. Just so you know how my day was, we woke up at 4 to go to sao paulo after spending the night at another missionaries house, where i froze to death on the floor. haha, then we had the conference, at lunch there, came back and on my way here, A drunk man grabbed my companion and gave him a hug asking for money, when i went over and talked to him gave him 2 reais then he kissed us both and we got away after praying with him. haha just an ordinary day in brazil!!! I love you!

I just had lunch at the coolest house! Oh how i cant wait to cook brazillian food for you guys!!! haha, so for everyone here, they usually only use Rock salt to cook there meat here. not small salt, but rock salt, just that, then they usually throw coal down on the concrete somewhere and put a grill over it. then they put the fat on the grill and let the whole piece cook for a little, then they cut it into smaller pieces and cook them individually after putting more salt on. It is soooooo good. haha, anyway, make sure you guys get to know the missionaries in our ward! Give them people to teach! Feed them! It would be the most amazing experience if you guys were able to help someone get baptized while im on mission. Also, tell dad to do his home teaching! Its so simple, but it is how we keep track of the members in the Church. One thing i have learned is that God will hold us responsible not only when we do something wrong, but when we do nothing at all. He is giving us part of the vineyard to be under our dominion so that we can help it grow and nourish it. There will be a day when we will stand before God and he will ask us what we did to help. And he will hold us accountable for what we did and didnt do. President explained it like this the day i walk in. Someone will say to Heavenly Father after this life, i saw the missionaries walk by, but they didnt say anything to me. I think this is the same with all of our callings. we need to magnify them.

So i have been thinking about buying some shoes here, and i think they actually have some great pairs! The shoes that i have wore out really fast.... haha, i need some with some thick soles. and I will go to a shoe place and check, we pass by like 5 shoe stores everyday, i just have only seen them work with wooden souled shoes. haha, so i really want to buy a pair here. the innersoles you sent me with saved my life. If i didnt have them, my feet would be destroyed. haha

I love you mom! I hate how fast the mission is going to me! haha Give everyone a big hug for me :)

Temos um Batismo Esta Semana!!!

Alright, this week has been very long, tiring and rewarding! haha, So monday and tuesday Elder Squires worked very hard doing contacts and staying focused. In fact, we were lead by the spirit to go to places. Usually we cross a bridge and go to the other side of the city to start working, but this week, last PDay we decided to stay on this side and talk to people. Elder Squires and I were just about ready to go home, when we passed this dark alley that had a sign that said dead end. haha, so I said, i feel like we should go here. haha, we went back there, and met the sweetest lady who went to church with us yesterday and we are teaching. haha, Elder Squires thanked me for being inspired to walk into a death alley to find a person who is truely ready to hear about the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ, haha.
We also had a bunch of miricles this week. On tuesday, I gave my first blessing in Português. It was an amazing experience. Tuesday night, we visited Rosangela to help her quit smoking, and after a powerful lesson, I felt inspired to ask her if she needed a priesthood blessing before we left, and she said yes. So she asked me to give it to her. It was hard to remember how to conjugate some of the verbs just because i wasnt used to saying or using verbs like I bless you, or we bless you, so it was a little diffucult. But the spirit was definately there, and I knew what I needed to bless her with through the spirit that I felt. We asked her to stop smoking by friday, her next interview with our District leader, and she said she will.
So by Wednesday, we returned to teach her again. We gave a very powerful lesson, and I remember being very direct and clear. We taught her about Faith, Miricles, Repentance, Desire and the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I had scriptures that I had written down in a notebook that were just perfect to teach her. The spirit was very strong, and we invited her to give us her last cigarrettes and just be done now. To choose right now and be free of this binding thing that was impeding her from Following the Example of the Savior to be baptized. As bold as we were, we were on the same page as each other (Elder Squires and I) because we were influenced by the Holy Ghost. The lesson went great, she made her choice, and I left with a pack of cigarrettes in my pocket :) haha, we told her that the Lord is capable of making miricles and if she quits and is baptized this week, that would indeed be a miricle and through her faith she could do it. We can do anything within the Lord´s Will through faith.
Then came the interview (friday), wow. haha, she was smiling when we got there, and we could tell by her face that she had quit smoking and that she indeed was ready. We shared a quick message and had a prayer, then Elder Merril did the interview. It went very well, she wanted to not do the baptism until the following week because an old missionary who was here was coming in town, but we we said it would be better for her to have him there while she is getting confirmed a member of the church when she recieves the Gift of the Holy Ghost.
Sunday. We only had 2 investigators at church, but they really loved it. After lunch and visiting a few people we practiced a musical number for the baptism, then we went to pick up Rosangela and walk with her. It was all going great! Except her 16 year old boy who was going to baptize her was on the other side of town! haha So we called him and started walking to the church. When we finally got to the church, William, the second counsiler of the Branch went to go get her son, the are in the picture of 2 guys on a motorcycle. haha

They got dressed, and the service started. The spirit was so strong, and everyone was so happy, Rosangela had a big smile on her face! So did everyone! And the missionary who baptised her children was able to come, he has been off his mission for about a month. So her son, Elias got in the water with his mom, and they tried about 7 times to get her under the water, but her knees kept coming up. She also got water in her nose the first time and the water was soooo cold (its the start of winter)
(when in reality its not that cold, we´re in brazil. haha) and it was really hard for her to get all the way under. He tried a couple more times while they were both on their knees. She could barely breathe, so she walked back up into the bathroom where some of the women of the ward were able to help her. I felt like i should bring my baptismal clothes incas something happend, so i had them in a room nearby, I asked if it would help if i stood in there to help, and the branch presidency though it would. So in all of about 30 seconds, i threw on my white clothes and got in the water, she came back down from the bathroom, then Elias said the Prayer again. On the first try, we got her in. She came up with such a shivering cold smile, but while walking up the steps, touched me on the shoulder and told me thank you. I was almost brought to tears, because i remember when I first met her, she couldnt understand anything, and she would tell everyone, Ele não intende nada! but since then i have grown in so many ways other than the language and now she is baptized with her whole family.
For those of you who may be confused about baptism, because it may sound like we drown people in freezing cold water, baptism is an Ordinance of our church. We baptize because Jesus Christ was baptized and he invited us all to be baptized in order to come unto him and enter in the Gate to have eternal life. We believe in Faith in Jesus Christ, Repentance  (which is an act or result of our faith), Baptism (which is a result of repentance and faith), recieving the gift of the holy ghost and enduring to the end by keeping the commandments. I would love to be able to talk to anyone who is confused, but i have very limited time, and i will be busy for the next 2 years. haha, but there are missionaries in almost every area across the world who are doing the same work as I am. They would love to talk, to you, as will I when I return.
This week I will work harder, I hope all of us can be inspired when we here the story of Rosangela quitting smoking after many years and being baptized by her son of 16 years old. I know that through the power of God we can do all things. We are his children, would you want you children to be able to do all that you can, even better? God has power of all and created all things. He knows that we can do anything through his power if we are doing it within the bounds of righteousness he has set for us. If we show faith in his Only Begotten son, we can become like our father. You can know with a certainty that God is pleased with you when you are keeping the commandments and you feel the spirit or the Holy Ghost work through you.

I love you all!
Elder Halls

PS- Happy Fathers Day Dad!!!!!!!! They dont celebrate it here, so i forgot.. haha but I love you!!!!
i sent ammon and tanner a letter last week, and I will be sure to send you all letters too! I love you all! Transfers are next week, and we are hoping that no one gets transfered here, but the president did ask me if i thought it would be easier to have a brazillian companion and i said yes. haha, so maybe i will get a brasiliero!!!! haha love you all!

Haha tell Mrs. Mittlestald I have thought of her class because in portugese, we have the word vocês, which translates to y´all, and she would use that to help us learn who was the subject or object of the sentances
Yum! Guess what's for lunch????!!!

"Nevertheless they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility, of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts unto God." ~Helaman 3:35

Oiiiiiiiiii

E aí minha família! this week has been just crazy! haha we have all new zone leaders, and now Elder Merril is my district leader!!! And president Moreira is leaving in like 2 weeks!!!!!! :( noooo!!!! anyway, i have a lot of stuff to talk about, muitas coisas para falar, muchas coasas para hablar. i think thats how you write it in spanish, i feel bad for anyone who is learning spanish.. haha, português is just so much prettier :)
Anyway, I was having a pretty tough time speaking the language, and being ok with getting things wrong (a lot of times its not because i cant communicate, its because i have fear of not being perfect) but then we had did a division with my zone leader, Elder Renato, which i think i sent a picture of, and he brought some life into this area! he only has one transfer left, and he really inspired me to just always be happy, and to always try to help others feel happy. So since that day, things have been going really smooth. I have been doing a lot better! He taught me a lot of new things in português, but mostly how to be excited while talking to people on the streets, and doing lessons. It was a great division.

So he slept in Jacareí that night, and we swiched back the next day, and Elder Squires and I were doing pretty good again! We had interviews the next day with president, which went really well. Our president is such an inspired man, after the interviews, a van came with all the packages and letters for our zone! haha, it was awesome!!! my house got 5 packeges!!! haha, and 4 of them were from you guys!!!! the other missionaries really like the candy and things that were sent! and there were so many amazing things in there!!! i went into more detail in the other letter, so i will talk more about other things, but pretty much, i have the best family in the whole world, and i loved the letters too from everyone! thank you so much!!! I also made brownies for a family after teaching a lesson, and they loved them! thanks for brownie mixes!!!
So we have been doing a lof of work with the part member families, and especially with a women named, Rosangela, her kids are already baptised, and she goes to church every week, she just needs to quit smoking. we planned her baptism for yesterday, but she still wasnt feeling very ready in the interview. So this week we are shooting for her to be totally done smoking and she should be baptized on sunday. She is so firm and is already sharing the gospel with other people, she just needs to be baptized.
Sunday-
The dedication of the temple was amazing. I forgot to bring my book that had my notes in it, but Deiter F. Utchdorf did the dedication, and also talked, along with  Quinten L Cook, and Claudio R M Costa! the same man who dedicated the ground for the gilbert temple! Claudio RM Costa is the President of the Area here.
Deiter F. Utchdorf spoke, then said, i feel impressed to share a story about a meeting here in Manaus that happened in 1977 i think, i dont have my notes. He said that James E Faust was there, along with the mission president, but it was alot of the members in the area, yet still a small meeting. James E Faust asked a boy to give the opening prayer. He said, I would love to give the opening prayer, but please let me also bear my testimony.
James E Faust also asked a girl if she would sing, and she said the same thing, I would love to, but let me bear my testimony also. And so the small meeting of about 40 people went, each wanting to bear testimony of the Savior who is so deeply embedded in their hearts.  That story touched me so much. It was definately something that everyone in the room could barely hold back tears while hearing. President Utchdorf talked about how the temple is a manifestation and a result of the faithfulness of the members here, and a fulfillment of profecy (A man named Grant Bangerter profecied that there would one day be a temple in manaus(who is related to my old companion Elder Bangerter))
The rain poured as tears from Heaven as the young adult choir sang Eu creo en Cristo, I believe in Christ. It was such an uplifting meeting.
The work is going good, we met a lady that accepted the book of mormon, and started reading while we were there, and is going to pray about the truth. I am so excited to talk to her next week! we have been finding families, it is just really hard to get people to go to church. We are going to do a lot more contacts this week.

I love you all so much!!!! this week should be great! even though its freezing cold and raining right now. haha

Hey everybody!?!

June 4, 2012

Hey everybody!?!
So this week was pretty tough. We tried to get a lot of less active members, and a lot of new people to go to church, but most people made the excuse that it was too far... Im really sad, and wish that we would have tried a lot harder to get people there, because the Prophet spoke! It was broadcasted in from Salt Lake City, and it was amazing. We had one person there that I´ve talked to a few times at a grocery store by our house, but he lives in the other Elders´ area. Ele é um dez. haha, he is awesome! He came up to us and asked us for a book of mormon, so we gave it to him. The day after, I saw him at the store and asked him if he read it, he said yeah, its hard to understand, there are different prophets! haha, we talked, then he talked to the other elders too, and the day after he went to Stake Conference and got to see the Prophet speak! I didnt get a chance to talk to him, but I am really excited to when I get the chance.
Conferência da Estaca was sooo awesome!!! First Elder Gonzalaz spoke to us in Portugues, which was amazing, but a little hard to understand because of his thick Uraguayen accent. He talked about fortalizing our families in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Then Elaine S. Dalton spoke, which I could barely understand her interperator. haha, then Neil L Anderson spoke. In portugues! It was an amazing talk, and his portugues is soo good! He has an accent, but he was very easy to understand he said that Him and Thomas S Monson talk alot about Brasil and they care alot about the people here. He gave 3 ways that parents can help their children grow, 1. Fortalizing their education, 2. Teaching about work 3. Bringing them to the knowlegde that Jesus Christ is the only way to bring us back to our father.  I loved these 3 points. He talked about how it is hard, but not impossible to give our children opportunites to work. He talked about how he lived on a farm, and he was paid 50 centavos to milk the cows each week. He learned about tithing, and saving money that way. He talked about how even though we may not live on a farm, we still have many opportunites to help our children learn how to earn money, save money, and pay tithing.
Thomas S Monson spoke, (through an interperator)
and talked about loving God with all your heart, soul and mind. He talked about how this is the greatest and first commandment. He also talked about how the second commandment is like unto it, to love your neighbors as yourself. I didnt hear much of his talk, because the interperator was very fast. But i remember he talked about following the savior, and how the saviour to everyone extends the commitment, follow me. He also said, we need to ask our selfs often the question. What would the saviour do in this situation.
He also talked about a beautiful story about one a day he felt inspired to visit a less active family in which ward he was the bishop. He knocked on the door, and someone said bishop, how did you know it was my birthday? haha, So he came in and they sang happy birthday, and there was one girl there with a beautiful voice, and he said, You have such a beautiful voice, you should sing in church this week. You could sing in the conference, you could even sing a solo? She came to church, and sang, and then the family started to go to church again:)
I Love listening to the prophet. We need to read the talks of conference over and over and over again. You will always find a message that will lift you up. We were at a persons home who the week before asked us to go to there house. They have 2 boys with severe mental disablilities, who are both in their 20s the whole family was baptized 10 years ago, but havent been back since. The 2 boys in their 20s kept asking for something that i didnt understand, finally on the 2nd visit to their house, I realized they were asking for the Liahona! haha, so I am going to bring on over that I have next time. We need to value the words of the prophets like gold! It is my testimony that Thomas S Monson is a true prophet. Em nome de Jesus Cristo, àmen.

Élder Halls

May 28 - keep praying for me.

Well, my time is very limited this week, because my companion and i are out of money for this month..hahaha, but I will try to express things that have happened,

So last week after I logged off email, a 24 year old guy named Obadias came to me and started talking to me, and I could understand just about everything and I began talking to him about the beliefs of our church. He was very interested about the gospel because his brother was baptised in São Paulo, so we talked, then followed him to his house and set up a time to meet with him. It has been hard to get a good lesson with him, because he has a lot of crazy view that he likes to explain. We found a family also, i will call the Carlos family, i dont know if I already mentioned them, but they live pretty far away on the top of the tallest hill. We taught them once, and it went really well, but the next time we showed up, the parents werent home, and the 3 children were going to church! but not ours... haha, so we walked with them on the way to church and taught them a lesson. We still are teaching Sydnei´s family, but they havent come to church yet, so it is getting a little discouraging.
Ok, so i have noticed some of you stopped praying for me to learn the language, because i said i already knew it, but i was just kidding. So hahaha, keep praying. Haha, it is very interesting. I can communicate fluently when the Lord needs me to, during lessons, extending invites, talking about the church, but when i go to buy something from a store, i dont know how to speak. haha, it is embarassing.. haha, so keep praying for me.

Also, We have a baptism marked!!!!! yayayayaya!!! It is for a women named Rosangela, her whole family is already baptized, at least her kids were a year ago, but she has had a problem with smoking, but we are going to work with her! I think she just needed someone to be excited and to ask her and help her with love, because she is so happy to begin quitting! so that will be June 17th, one week after the temple of Manouse (spelling?) is dedicated!

The confirmation for Daiane went amazing! She looked so happy! Probably the greatest moment of this week was that, and passing her in the streets and just seeing how happy she was. She just looks so much happier than the first time we met her! I couldnt help just being so happy that day because we saw her!

I went to another church last night. I didnt want to, but i have a companion. haha, i almost got up and bore a testimony about the savior and his love, but i prayed if i should, and the spirit told me i shouldnt. The church was definately a wild experience, It is interesting to see what the other church think of God, and our saviour Jesus Christ. If anyone is reading this who is not a member of the LDS church, I encourage you to seek out the truth in the Book of Mormon, in the Living Prophets, and pray with real intent to God to see if these things are true. You will be amazed at how real God is, and how much He loves you. He has always loved you with infinate love, but Your view of these things will be made more clear through the tools that God has given us. Just try it! haha

I loved reading the emails this week from Emily, Dad and Mom! I got a letter from grandma last week and 2 missionary ties!!! So things are going good! haha, I love you guys, I can feel your testimonies everytime i think of you!

"I am so blessed to be on a mission serving the Lord."

Beautiful Baptism Day! Sunday, May 22, 2012  ~ Elder Squires, Daiane, & Elder Squires

Daiane with her friends and familyElder Halls
May 21, 2012, Jacarei, SP, Brazil

Well, I can speak portugues now! thanks for the prayers! But seriously! haha, this week was amazing! I love this area soo much, and I love the people here!!! I don´t know what I´m going to do when they make me leave. The members, the non-members, everything here is just so awesome!!! A girl in our ward named Jérsica told me that once I can understand I will smile more, and she has been right!!! This week I have understood so much more than I ever have, and I think I owe it all to prayer, and the study of the scriptures in Português.

Tão. Elder Jackson fui embora, and now he is in Idaho! If anyone meets him, they should tell him that we all miss him and love him! He was such and awesome missionary, and I learned so much from him, he was always very excited to do the work. That is one thing that I have learned that is one of the best things anyone can have. You need to be excited, passionate, animated and firm about whatever you are doing. If you aren´t, then its probably not worth it. I am trying to have a mission filled with fire as Jeffery R Holland said, with real love for the people. I feel like this week I have learned alot about that.

On friday, we were working really hard in one side of town, when Elder Squires said, alright, lets go to Rosalie´s house, I almost didn´t want to go because we were working so well in this area getting contacts, but he reminded me that it was my idea haha, so we went. We didnt have a compromisso with them, but we decided to go anyway. We got there and her second oldest son George was leaving the house, Rosalie said ´George, go get Daiane (His Girlfriend) and the missionaries will share a message.´ He said, ok. and Then 20 minutes later we were teaching her. We had already taught her about everything except all the commandments, and she had already ask God to see if these things were true. She also had recieved an answer and told us she knew it was true, but she couldn´t be baptized because George was living with her.
So Friday, we taught her, and I felt really blessed to understand everything and be able to convey every thought I had in understandable português. We were teaching, and I asked her about her situation with George and if she feels ready to be baptized, she said that George was moving his stuff back to his mothers house, and she really wanted to be baptized, so we asked if she would be willing to have an interview saturday night to talk about baptism and see if she is ready. She accepted!
The next day we came over about 3:00 to see if Rosalie would accompany us to another investigators house with Altamir to teach 2 women in their 20´s. She said she was busy, and asked if we would teach Daiane instead, but we had a better idea! Haha, we took Daiane with us and she sat through the lesson, and gave the most beautiful answer when I asked her the question, How do you feel when you recieve an answer? She said you feel peace, joy and you just know that it is right.
After that we had another appointment, so Elder Squires and I, with Altamir went and then returned at about 5:30. The zone leaders were getting close for the interview, and we needed to meet them at the Bus Station, so Elder Squires stayed at the house on a split and I went with Altamir. We did this, because we still needed to teach some more things before the interview. Walking back from the bus station was awesome. I´m walking with 3 Brasilians telling them everything they need to know about everything that we need to do tonight in Português. Muito legal, cara!!!!  I know that i had the gift of tounges because Daiane needed 2 missionaries to be able to teach her the things to be baptized. She had the interview, then we invited her to be baptized after church, she said, no.. that too early. So we said, you´re ready, you had the interview, you have a strong testimony, so what if you get baptized in the evening? Can we do a baptism at 5? The she said, sure! We were so happy!!! She was so happy too! The next day at church she was smiling so much! It was amazing! She asked me to baptize her, and I was so excited and happy for her!
Funny thing, but not really, Jérsica Called, George´s sister and said, sorry we cant have the baptism, she doesnt feel ready... so we were sad, and were trying to call her back because the call dropped. I went out side and prayed that everything would work out, and that she will feel the spirit testify to her, then when i came back in, Altamir (our ward mission leader) was leaning down to pull the plug on the fonte when his phone rang and they said it was just a joke. haha, but they ran out of credits on their phone, so they couldnt tell us! haha, it wasnt funny.. just a little i guess.. hahah
The baptism happened, it only took me one try! She looked so happy, and she is so ready to begin the journey that will bring her more and more happiness everyday in her life. I have only experienced that feeling a few times in my life, when I baptized my brother Tanner, when I did baptism in the temple a few weeks before I left. It is such an amazing feeling, and you can definately feel the power and spirit of God in the symbolic ordinance to follow him and to be born again. I am so excited for Daiane! Also for George, her boyfriend. It was such an amazing experience, and I thank Heavenly Father for allowing me to share that special time with them.
The Church is true, we all know it. We can feel the power and spirit of God in our lives, and if we cant feel, we know something is missing. I pray that everyone will seek the Lord, and be willing to do anything that he wants you to do. Even if you dont know why you are doing it, or you get an answer, and you follow it, but dont know right away if it is the right thing. Joseph Smith saw God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ then had 3 years where God tested him, and left him alone. Sometimes in our life we will recieve an answer, follow it and then doubt, because the consequences are hard. When Lehi sent his sons to get the plates, Sariah began to complain to her husband Lehi, because she thought her sons were in the hands of Laban, and they were going to die in the Dessert. Sometimes in our lives we feel simply dont know what the Lord has in store. What trials he will bless us with to help us learn, or what blessings he will give us so that we might learn and grow as well. I love you all, and hope that we can all remember to put the lord first and to be diligent in our obedience. I am so blessed to be on a mission serving the Lord. I love the people here, and am happier than I have ever been in my life. I never want to leave. haha, seriously

"The reason why we do everything is because of our love that we develop towards God and all of his children" ~Elder Halls

Note from Elder Halls Mom - We had the BEST time on Mother's Day talking to Elder Halls on the phone and using Skype! AmAzing!!! It was a beautiful experience for our family!

Elder Halls, Squires, and Vanessa singing "Abide With Me"

May 15, 2012

Long time no communication! Exept for yesterday... haha, Anyway, thanks for the spirit that everyone brought into the home of  Vanessa and Felipe and Mario. We have been working with Vanessa, the girl who spoke english  over skype, trying to get her to come back to church so that we could also get her little brother mario baptized, but she hasn't had much of a desire. But we kept teaching her and the last two weeks she has come to church! So she is making progress, we have also been helping her to know the importance of prayer, which has been hard for her, but last night, after dad gave the prayer over skype to everyone in that home, we were leaving, and she wanted to say a prayer in English! We taught her a few words, and then she gave a very sincere prayer. She told me to tell dad that he was the inspiration. She said she wants to learn how to bear her testimony in English and read the Book of Mormon too! She was very touched by dad´s prayer, and the spirit it brought, there were also 3 non-members in the room including her Grandma, Mother and her younger brother. So thanks for the help dad! Everyone thought tanner´s song was so cute too! And they couldnt stop talking about how beautiful mom, emily and chaille are! haha, Vanessa thought you were muito simpático mom! haha, so everyone here was touched by everyones kindness and spirit. I think it was also amazing for them to see how close the temple is to our house and to see the reality of it. Vanessa has never been to the temple, and now she has! haha, i love you guys, it was an amazing experience to talk to you all.

Transfers are tomorrow, next week i will have a camera, and i will try to send pictures. Elder Jacson is going home this week to meridian, idaho. So we are getting someone here for sure, i hope it is a brazillian so i can learn from a brazillian.

Seeing Elder Jacson go home is making me think about what i want to be, and how i want to feel before i go home. The Lord wants us all to be sucessful and to feel the feelings associated with it. Success to me as a missionary is feeling the spirit work through you and touch peoples hearts, obedience to the rules and how much you love the people. I have also been thinking about what Jeffery R Holland taught us. What makes the busy schedules worth it, and gives the strict rules meaning? It is our love for the people, without that, nothing has meaning, even life. With it, everything has meaning, even death. How we show that love is through our obedience to the Commandments of God, and really seeking to follow them, which commandments encompass every aspect of our life, from Loving God, Loving our neighbors. The reason why we do everything is because of our love that we develop towards God and all of his children, and we see God´s children as that. Children of God. Even if you see someone on the side of the road smoking, drinking, and asking you for money, you can still see the potential in them, they have a Father who commands the Heavens, they have a Father who weeps to be with with them, they have a Father who loves them. If we remember who we are, we can return to him, through the Love and mercy of God, because he sent us his Son, Jesus Christ.

This is one of my favorite mormon tabernacle choir songs-

In the quiet misty morning
When the moon has gone to bed,
When the sparrows stop their singing
And the sky is clear and red,
When the summer's ceased its gleaming
When the corn is past its prime,
When adventure's lost its meaning -
I'll be homeward bound in time
Bind me not to the pasture
Chain me not to the plow
Set me free to find my calling
And I'll return to you somehow

If you find it's me you're missing
If you're hoping I'll return,
To your thoughts I'll soon be listening,
And in the road I'll stop and turn
Then the wind will set me racing
As my journey nears its end
And the path I'll be retracing
When I'm homeward bound again
Bind me not to the pasture
Chain me not to the plow
Set me free to find my calling
And I'll return to you somehow

Busy serving and teaching in Brazil

Ok, I dont have much time to write this week, but it went very well!!! We had a conference with the president i think on thursday, that was amazing!!! He has such a Portugal accent, haha, i could understand alot more of what i hear this time around. haha, the language is coming. After the conference, i was speaking really well, and i could communicate and express my thoughts really well! its really hard without Brazilians in our home.
Então eu acho que dois dias atrás, I think two days ago, we were teaching Daiane. She has a boyfriend who is a member, and we have been teaching here. During studies in the morning, i felt like she really wanted to be baptized, and its something that we havent asked her directly yet, but i really felt like she really wants it. So during the lesson, i was teaching about something, and i just asked, do you want to follow the example of Jesus Christ? and she said yes, then she said she really wants to be baptized!!! I was so excited when she said that, but then we realized she is living with her boyfriend/unofficial husband, so she told us that she will pray to figure out what to do about it, whether they should get married, or not live together. The work is going great, we are teaching a family that 2 weeks ago spent an hour in the rain trying to find the church, and couldnt find it, haha, because of our bad directions.. but we are really excited to see them, and we asked them to be baptized, but they want to see how church is first, which i know that they will love, so i am so excited for them!! We are also teaching Daiane´s aunt, and a family we have been working with for a while to come back to church came this week! so it ahs been great!!!

I love you all! I know this church is true, i can feel the spirit manifest its truth whenever i put faith into reading the scriptures, praying and keeping the commandments. No unhollowed hand can stop this work from progressing.

A little bit more from his Dad's letter...

I love our area, there are a million hills and so it is extremely tiring, but im used to it now. our area is about the size of all of queen creek with as many people as gilbert. it is a very big area. I live in a house on the corner of a very tall hill. There are two american missionaries that live with us, elder Merril from medford oregon and elder Jacson from connecticut, but his family moved to meridian, idaho. he is going home in 2 weeks, so he is trunky.. haha
Our apartment is tight, its a covered garage type kitchen with title everywhere, then inside we have a bathroom and one room but its pretty big. We hang dry our clothes in another driveway place. it feels like a beach house. haha, its all made out of block.
Its hard for me to not to tell you everything im doing too!! haha, We walk everywhere, we take a bus to district/zone meeting every tuesday in Sao Jose Dos Campos. The members are amazing. We get fed lunch everyday, lunch is the biggest meal here, and everyone just eats soooo much. haha, so big lunches and no dinners... The members are very kind and the honestly adore all the missionaries. I cant understand all of what they say, but i always here the words missão and almoço in talks on sunday. mission, and lunch.

THUMBS UP...7-UP!!!!

Elder Halls giving a THUMBS UP!!!....Elder Squires just smiling!!

...still raining....

April 30, 2012
Note from Elder Halls Mom: In the last letter, I  shared my thoughts on how the ability to learn another language "beautifully" is in our blood, and I reminded him that his Papa Roberts went to Argentina on his mission and learned the language "beautifully", and even helped other missionaries learn the accent/dialect of the language. I also reminded him of all the Cox relatives who have served in Brazil and South America and have been able to learn the language. I said one day it would just "click!" I also reminded him of the blessing he received from our Stake President, Matthew Riggs, that said he would be able to learn and speak the language. Our Stake Presidency in Elder Halls home ward was changed, and they put our Bishop, Matthew Wright in as the 1st Counselor. Also, about the Prom dress reference. I spent the past weekend sewing sleeves on a gorgeous dress for his sister after the one we custom ordered was stuck in New Jersey the day of Prom. I sent him a picture of his sister and her date.

Haha mom! I love your letter, the language is coming.. haha, having only americans in my apartment isnt helping, but i am learning alot. I pray as well for it to one day just click. The stronger my desire to communicate is, the easier it is to speak. This week, the spirit led us to a home of a man named syndei with his family, Mariana, orlando and Edina. Mariana and orlando are probaly about 20, and Edina is his wife. We met Sydnei on the streets about a week before. We clapped there door, and they were so kind and welcoming, and we walked in, got to know them a little bit, and taught the restoration. I dont remember all that was said, but i remember the spirit was so strong, and they are truely ready to recieve it. They understand the need for a restoration of Gods church, and they accepted the book of mormon. I was able to communicate very well to them, and the things that i wasnt able to communicate, was even the more remarkable experience. I had things that i wanted to say, but had no idea how to express it, so i prayed that my companion would have the same thoughts and that the spirit would teach this family. As i prayed earnestly for the spirit to enter the home, my companion said word for word, ideas that i wanted to say and thing that i wanted expressed. Both times we left this home, we fell on our knees as soon as we were away from the home, and thanked our Father in Heaven for showing us this family. I am very excited to see them progress.

About this week, it has rained for the past 3 days, and walking here was crazy! im still trying to figure out how to upload pictures without a cord... haha, ill figure it out! I am very excited for the new stake presidency!!! I wonder who our new bispo is going to be? Maybe... (((please edit out before showing- (??????????????)- thank you :)))

:) I love you all! I,m glad everything worked out for emily at prom!!! Parabens on the dress, I give you the MVM(most valuable mom) award for the week! That beats all the amazing lunches i had!!!
Keep Praying for me, i hope i can pick up the language and start doing some work. i just need to remember that most missionaries by this point would still be in the CTM, because they did the 6 week program with us, the old program would have me go into the field this week! Well its 3:00 and we are going to eat lunch. Still raining. haha, its starting to get really cold! Whats the weather like over there?  I love you!

Elder Holland visits Sao Paulo East!!!

Mon, Apr 23, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Mom, Emily, Dad, Ammon, Tanner, Friends, family. haha you are all my family. I feel inadaquite. The faith and testimony of your letter (mom) and especially emily´s letter brought me to tears. Eu vou sentir saudades, i will miss our ward and stake, but i know the lord is in control and does things to prepare us for the blessings he wants desperatly to give us. Sorry about saying i sent a letter... i meant email... haha, i will send one this week :) Except i lost all of my addresses that i brought with me... sooo... yeah.. haha. I am very excited to see where we are moving to! Sounds awesome! I think i sent an email to dad telling him how much i love him, but i dont think it went through, to mushy i guess. anyway, dad, i love you, and am so grateful for your example in my life. Mom, i love you para sempre, Emily, your letter made me cry, and I love you. Ammon, I love you so much! I still am waiting for a letter from you!!! Tanner, i miss you! cant wait to talk to you!
So seeing Jeffery R Holland was the most amazing part of my mission yet. He is truely called of God, I know it, and I cannot deny it. I dont know how anyone who shakes his hand and looks in his eyes could not know. His wife gave an amazing talk. She is just as inspired as he is! His talk was amazing, i dont have my notes, but i remember what he talked about. He talked about us doing the same thing that we ask our investigators to do. We ask them to make sacrifices that will change their lives, God is asking nothing less from us. We are God´s investigators. We ask our investigators to study a little harder, God is asking us the same. We invite our investigators to be batized by water and the spirit, and he asks the same from us. We need to become converted, he said, do you want to serve a mission, or do you want to serve a firey mission with passion, prayer, love for your investigators and everyone that you come across.
He looked as us, and with tears in his eyes said, I weep so much because of the sin and sorrow of this world. He said that one of the beautiful truths that our church has brought the world is the image of a weeping God. He told us that no young many in the history of time was changed by a mission as much as he was. It shaped every aspect of his life.
I am so grateful for being here, if anyone has doubt about serving a mission, tell them to talk to me. I have only been out for 7 weeks and i know, without a doubt this is where God wants every worthy male who is capable. Giving your time in service to the lord will only help you come to realize how much you are actually recieving.
ANYWAY>>... about the details of my area, because i know it´s killing everyone! especially mom. haha, I am in Jacarei, and everyone speaks portuguese. I am trying very hard. haha, there are hills EVERYWHERE. its funny because the city is divided into two areas, the city, which is elder Merrill and elder Jackson, and they have a ward, and no hills. And the other half of the city is like a gilbert/queen creek suburban area condensed in a way we can walk around to every place. There are sooo manny hills. But i love this area. haha, i love the members of the branch. We have some farm land too in my area that i hope to send a picture to you of next week. Most the roads are stone, mom, i might need some more shoes.. haha. My companion is awesome! Elder Squires has actually only been in brazil for 3 months, because he served is first 7 months in texas waiting for a visa!!! haha, so we are two gringos running around trying to learn portugues and invite people to come unto Christ.
Last night, we were walking down a street when i saw some kids, and i started to joke a little with them while showing them how to play futebol. haha, after a few minutes of doing hand stands and playing futebol, my companion and I found ourselves in the home with 10 people, most being children about 12-16 years old, and a mom. We taught the restoration and the mother and one of the children prayed. The spirit was so strong, and i felt great, so i started to testify about God´s love for us and how he sent his son, Jesus Christ. And how he gave us prophets to guide us. When i realized everyone there was laughing at me... i couldnt even finish and then the mother of the home said, Eu não intende nada! haha, i laughed, and appologized, but inside i was kinda hurt.. haha it was a very humbling experiance for me, and i realized i really need to work harder on the language. haha, i am very excited to go back to that home and teach them again. It was an amazing experience, even if they couldnt understand anything.. hahaha
Well, i wish i could have been there sunday! Sounds like a lot of very powerful missionaries are going out. Sam, Taylor, Cody, Lincoln, Conner, i would love to get all their email addresses to write them! They are going to love every second. It goes by too fast.
Love you!
Elder Halls

ps. Mom! i love you, i have some things you can send me :) haha, just an idea
Granola (homemade, vacuum sealed if possible)
Reflections of Christ (If you cant mail the book, could you mail the DVD?)
Pop Rocks (members want some :))
Addresses (i lost them all... haha)
A new watch? (haha, maybe? just thought i´d throw it out there, one that doesnt have cloth, because the cloth got really stinky... or you could just let me buy one here)
English Dictionary
Peanut Butter
CTR ring (the one that chaille gave me.. i forgot it..)
Can of Chille? (Cattle drive)
LOTS OF LETTERS!!!!!!
LOTS OF PICTURES!!!! (everyone asks to see pictures of my family, and all i have are ones of us all crying the day i left. haha)

pss, i didnt bring the right charger for my camera, so i need to either find a universal camera battery charger, or i need a new camera... haha, but i will figure that out. I will pay you back if you do happen to buy one, and i think that we could get a good 12 mpx one for only $140,
I am sorry this is so long. haha, these things are just suggestions, also. I hear that flat rate boxes are the o melhor facil way to send things. Use alot of tape though, the more tape, the less likely the box will be randomly checked by customs. I love you.
